Both colors in roulette: zero on red and a minus on zero

American roulette accepts a chip on both Red and Black in one spin. European roulette in the same layout leaves one zero open; here two are open: 0 and 00. On a color, the result of this spin is always zero. A plus does not appear on any number from 1 to 36.

One unit is placed on Red and on Black. In total, 2 is on the table. If Red comes up, the red chip returns 2 and the black chip is lost: the same 2 come back, 0 net. Black is arranged as a mirror and also gives 0. A green pocket takes both chips: −2.

Of 38 pockets, 36 give zero and 2 give minus 2. Over a full pass that is −4 with 76 staked. Dividing −4 by 76 is again 5.26 per 100. The layout does not get around the table’s share. It hides that share in two pockets and removes the plus from all the others.

Two outcomes on American roulette

The “net” column is the difference from the two units that were sitting on the colors before the spin.

PocketHow manyShare of spinsNet
Red or Black3694.74%0
0 or 0025.26%−2

5.26% here is the share of green spins, not a separate tax on top. The same fraction 2/38 also appears as the share per 100 staked, because on 36 colored pockets the result is zero, and the whole minus sits in the two greens. The expectation of one spin is −4/38, about −0.11 at a stake of 2.

A hundred spins need not show four zeros

If over 38 spins each pocket came up once, there would be 36 zeros and two times −2, a result of −4. A live hundred is not arranged that way. Zero may not come up even once, and then a hundred spins ends at zero with 200 staked. It may come up five times, and then the minus is already 10. The average over many such hundreds is 200 × 5.26 / 100 = 10.53 units in favor of the table.

00each colored spin returned the stake
1−2the other spins at zero
2−4that many greens in one pass of 38 pockets
5−10the colors still gave no plus

A zero in the result column is not a win. It is the return of one’s own two units. A session that “lost nothing” is easy to take for a working system. It simply has not met a green pocket yet.

One zero on the European wheel

On 37 pockets the colored pockets are the same 36, and the green is one. A full pass gives one time −2 and 36 zeros: a result of −2 with 74 staked, which is 2.70 per 100. There is still no plus on any number. French roulette with half the stake returned on zero would turn that single green spin into −1, not into −2. On the RoulCoin wheel there are two zeros, and both take the chip in full.

In England the second zero does not drop out of the layout. 00 takes both chips just as 0 does. A time zone does not turn a zero result on Red into plus one unit.

On the numbers 1–36, two chips on both colors return exactly themselves. The only nonzero result is minus 2, and it happens on 0 and 00.

How not to take a return for a win

Before the spin it is worth deciding what counts as success. If success means “the stake came back,” the layout will often look successful and will not give a plus even once. Playing online without registration, such a pair of chips can sit on a virtual balance: guest chips do not turn into a withdrawal, and a zero result on Red is visible at once, without waiting for green.

  • The chips on the colors are equal. An extra unit on Red is already a different layout.
  • Red and Black in this spin do not give a plus. There is nowhere here for a plus to come from.
  • 0 and 00 are written down as −2, not as a reason to double both chips.
  • Even with Odd, and 1–18 with 19–36, are arranged the same way: 36 pockets at zero, two greens at minus 2.

Why doubling after zero does not repair the layout

After −2, the next pair of chips, if it is doubled, already stakes 4. Green will take everything again. A colored spin still returns the stake and does not cover the previous zero, because net it gives 0, not a plus. A ladder on this field has nothing to earn between the zeros.

Does Red with two chips give plus 1?

No, it gives zero. The red chip brings a profit of 1, and the black chip in the same spin loses 1. The same 2 units that were staked come back to the table.

Can any number from 1 to 36 come out ahead?

No. All 18 red and all 18 black give 0 net. A plus is not provided for this layout by the payout.

Does 00 also take both chips?

Yes. Both 0 and 00 give −2. Together that is 2 pockets out of 38, 5.26% of spins. On the other 36 the result is zero.

If zero stays away for a long time, is the system ahead?

No. While there are no greens, the result stays at zero. That is a return of stakes, not profit. The average minus appears together with 0 and 00.

The layout is easy to take for protection against color: a loss really does happen only on the zeros. Neighboring playing strategies at least leave spins in which the bankroll grows. Here there are no such spins, and 5.26 per 100 staked has not gone anywhere.
