Corner in roulette: four numbers and a payout of 8 to 1

American roulette pays 8 to 1 for a Corner. European roulette pays the same for the same four numbers. A Corner is a square of four numbers at the crossing of the rows. The first one on the layout is 1, 2, 4 and 5. A hit on any of them gives a profit of 8. The other 34 pockets, including 0 and 00, take the chip.

The chance of one Corner is 4 out of 38, which is 10.53% of spins, about one spin out of ten. If each pocket came up once, four hits would give 4 × 8 = 32, and 34 misses would take 34. The result is −2 with 38 staked. Again, 5.26 per 100. Four numbers are not milder than one number and not harsher than a Line. Only the frequency of a plus is different.

Two Corners that do not share numbers cover 8 pockets. Below, that is 1-2-4-5 and 19-20-22-23, one unit each. A hit on one gives a profit of 8 and takes the second chip: +7 net. A miss on both gives −2. The numbers 3, 6, 21 and 24 are not in these squares, although they lie in neighboring cells.

One Corner and two on American roulette

The chips equal 1. Net is the difference from what was sitting on the squares.

Two Corners win in 8 pockets out of 38. The expectation of a spin: 8/38 × 7 + 30/38 × (−2) = 56/38 − 60/38 = −4/38, about −0.11 at a stake of 2. Per unit that is 5.26 per 100. One Corner gives 4/38 × 8 + 34/38 × (−1) = −2/38.

A full pass, and a neighboring square that is no longer the same one

Corner 1-2-4-5 and Corner 2-3-5-6 share 2 and 5. That is not eight numbers. If 5 lands, both chips play, and the result will not be +7. Such pairs are not in the first table. For a clean +7, shared numbers are forbidden.

1-2-4-5 and 2-3-5-62 and 56both chips play; this is not +7

Over a pass of 38 pockets, one Corner at one unit gives −2. Two that do not overlap give 8 × 7 − 30 × 2 = 56 − 60 = −4 with 76 staked. Minus 4 out of 76 equals minus 2 out of 38. On 37 pockets, one Corner has 33 misses, not 34, and the share falls to 2.70. The payout stays 8 to 1. The RoulCoin wheel does not strike 00 out of the misses.

A Corner does not include zero

Not a single square of the numbers 1–36 contains 0 or 00. Green pockets are always a miss for a Corner. The Five number package covers both zeros together with 1, 2 and 3 and pays 6 to 1, and a full pass gives −3, not −2. Corner 1-2-4-5 covers 1 and 2, but not 0, not 00 and not 3. These are different fields, even if the chips sit at one corner of the layout.

In England, 4 and 5 do not become green and do not take 00 onto themselves. A time zone does not add a fifth number to the square. Four numbers remain four.

Corner 1, 2, 4 and 5 pays 8 to 1. Over 38 different pockets one chip gives −2. Two such squares with no shared numbers give −4 at twice the stake.

How not to slide the chip onto a crossing if you play online

The boundary of four numbers is narrower than the line between them. A chip a little to the side can become a Split of two numbers, paying 17 to 1, or a Street. Before the spin, name four numbers. Playing online for money is possible after an account is created. A live balance adds neither 0 nor 3 to the square.

  • A Corner has four numbers, and the payout is 8 to 1.
  • The second Corner must not share a single number with the first, if the result +7 is wanted.
  • 0 and 00 are a miss for the whole chip.
  • After a miss the square is not doubled, unless a ladder is written down separately.

Why 8 to 1 is not an extra payment for a square at the edge

Corner 31-32-34-35 at the bottom of the layout pays the same 8 to 1 and covers the same four pockets out of 38. The edge near the zeros does not make 1-2-4-5 more frequent. The chance of a square is 4/38 on every spin, wherever it lies.

Does Corner 1, 2, 4, 5 win on three?

No. The square is 1, 2, 4 and 5. Three belongs to Street 1-2-3 and to Corner 2-3-5-6, not to this one. For this Corner, three is a miss.

Do two Corners give plus 8?

No, plus 7, if the numbers are not repeated. A profit of 8 on the successful square is reduced by the one unit of the second. The stake is 2.

How often does one Corner come up?

In 4 pockets out of 38, which is 10.53%, about one spin out of ten. 0 and 00 are not among these four.

On a European wheel, does a Corner pay 9 to 1?

No, the same 8 to 1. There is one fewer miss, and the share per 100 staked equals 2.70. The RoulCoin wheel is 38 pockets.

Four numbers in a square are often placed “on a corner” in the hope of a special payout. Neighboring playing strategies cover three numbers with a Street or six with a Line, and a full pass there also gives −2 on 38 units staked. A square is worth naming as four numbers, otherwise the chip lands on a neighbor where 2 and 5 are already shared.
