American roulette takes 2 units out of 38 staked from an even chance. European roulette on the same color takes 1 out of 37. A flat bet does not offset that share by the size of the chip: every spin stakes the same number, with no ladder and no row.
Below, the chip equals 1 and sits on Red, Black, Even, Odd, or on the half-field 1–18 or 19–36. There are 18 winning pockets and 20 losing ones. The payout equals the stake. The thresholds of plus 10 and minus 20 are the player’s rule for when to leave the table. The wheel does not see these thresholds.
The fraction 2/38 equals 5.26%. That is both the share of the two green pockets on the wheel and the expected minus of one unit staked on a color. There is no second tax on top of the green pockets: the minus is assembled from them.
One spin and a hundred of the same on American roulette
One spin gives +1 or −1. A hundred spins of one unit stake 100 and on average give the table 5.26. A larger chip multiplies both the stake and this minus. The account ceiling may not accept a large chip: the limit is checked separately, and the numbers below are for teaching.
| Chip on a color | Staked over 100 spins | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 100 | −5.26 |
| 5 | 500 | −26.32 |
| 10 | 1 000 | −52.63 |
A single hundred spins easily drifts by about ten units away from its average. The expected minus of 5.26 is smaller than that scatter, so a short session often ends both in a plus and in a minus deeper than five units. Over a long distance the scatter grows more slowly than the table’s share accumulates.
A threshold of plus 10 against a threshold of minus 20
The session is stopped when the bankroll of the stretch has reached +10 or −20, whichever happens first. The stake equals 1 the whole time. On 38 pockets, plus 10 arrives in about 31.98% of such sessions, and minus 20 in 68.02%. On 37 pockets the same thresholds give 47.96% and 52.04%.
| Wheel | The session reached +10 | The session reached −20 | Winning pockets |
|---|---|---|---|
| 38 pockets | 31.98% | 68.02% | 18 |
| 37 pockets | 47.96% | 52.04% | 18 |
The plus threshold is twice as close as the minus threshold, and still, on an American wheel, about 68 sessions out of 100 reach minus 20. The European wheel almost evens these shares, but plus 10 does not become a frequent outcome there either. Stopping the session does not change the payout of a pocket. It only forbids staking further after a number named in advance.
Where a flat chip loses to a ladder in appearance and does not lose by share
A ladder after a loss can close a short series at plus one unit and, in one break, take hundreds. A flat unit does not do that: every spin adds or subtracts the same chip. Per 100 staked the table takes the same 5.26. French roulette, where zero returns half the stake, would lower the loss on a color to about 1.35. On the RoulCoin wheel there is no such return.
| How the color is staked | One lucky spin | Eight losses in a row | Per 100 staked |
|---|---|---|---|
| A flat chip of 1 | +1 | 8 | 5.26 |
| Doubling from 1 | +1 to the series | 255 | 5.26 |
| A step of one chip from a start of 5 | depends on the current stake | 68 | 5.26 |
Eight losses of a flat unit cost 8. The same streak under doubling costs 255, and under a step from a start of 5 it costs 68. The share in the right-hand column is the same. Only the size of the piece in which the minus arrives changes.
Plus 10 is closer than minus 20, but on 38 pockets about 32 sessions out of 100 reach the plus, and about 68 reach minus 20.
How to set the threshold if you play online
For a player in England the threshold does not depend on the city: 18 pockets out of 38 do not become 19 because of the time zone. Two numbers, a plus and a minus, are written down before the first chip. Otherwise “one more spin” after minus 20 is no longer a threshold, but a new session without a rule.
- The chip grows neither after a win nor after a loss.
- Plus 10 and minus 20 are counted from this session’s bankroll, not from a large win of the previous day.
- 0 and 00 go into the minus as the full stake, not as half.
- A color change after three losses is not written into the rule: Red and Black have the same 20 bad pockets.
Why a frequent plus on a short session does not cancel 5.26
Over ten spins the expected minus is only 0.53 units. The scatter of ten spins is larger than this number, so a plus on a short stretch is ordinary. Over a thousand spins of one unit the expected minus is already 52.63, and it is harder to hide that inside the scatter. A flat bet shows the table’s share without a ladder; it does not get around it.
Do five units instead of one reduce the share?
No. Over 100 spins of 5, 500 is staked, and the expected result is −26.32. That is the same 5.26 per 100 staked, only the chip is five times larger.
Does the threshold of plus 10 trigger more often than minus 20?
On a wheel of 38 pockets, no: 31.98% of sessions reach +10, and 68.02% reach −20. On 37 pockets the shares are 47.96% and 52.04%.
After five reds, is the flat bet moved to Black?
The chance of Black does not grow from that. For Red and for Black there are still 18 winning pockets out of 38. Moving the bet does not zero out chips already staked.
Does zero take half on a flat bet?
On this wheel, no. 0 and 00 take the unit in full. Half the stake on zero is a different rule, on a single zero, and it is not in the tables above.
An identical chip does not look like a strategy until the cost of eight losses is set beside it. Neighboring playing strategies change exactly that cost, not the share per 100 staked. Thresholds are worth writing down before the first unit lands on a color.
